Cancer epidemiology. The group has consolidated a research line on cancer over the last two decades by taking part in the cohort study European Prospective In- vestigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), focused on diet, cancer, and lifestyle and gentic interactions. Also recently, the group has joined the Spanish multi-center case-control population study (MCC-Spain), developed within the CIBERESP, aimed at investigating the effect of the environment and its interaction with genetic factors on high-incidence tumours in Spain. Furthermore, the group has an active paticipation in several national and interna- tional projects on cancer survival (EUROCARE, CONCORD, RARECARE), and information systems and cancer regis- tries (EUROCHIP, REDEPICAN, REDECAN).
Epidemiology ofcardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. In the field of other chronic dis- eases, the group participates in the DARIOS and FRESCO studies, on cardiovascular risk functions for the Spanish population, and in the EPIC-CVD study, conceived to per- fom a joint study of the effect of genetic factors, biomark-
ers, and life styles, on coronary heart disease and stroke in Europe. On diabetes, the group takes part in the Europe- an case-cohort InterAct study on the interaction between genetic and modifiable life-style factors (particularly diet and physical activity), and has designed and developed the DINO study (study on diabetes, nutrition, and obesity in the Region of Murcia). It is also noteworthy the participa- tion in an interesting project to analyse whether the pres- ence of specific antibodies for rheumatoid arthritis could be able to predict the onset of the disease, and what are the related factors (gentic and environmental) that could affect this process. Other specific objective of the group is to estimate the burden of infectious diseases in Spain with a special focus on hepatitis B and C. Finally, the group has research interests in the epidemiology of neurological disorders such as Parkinson or Alzheimer disease, and dementia, and it is currently leading the PEGASUS-Murcia study (study on health and quality of life in the Region of Murcia), a population-based survey to know the preva- lence of mental disorders, co-morbidity patterns and relat-
