COLLABORATORS: López Ciércoles, Olga. Main lines of research
Genetic Epidemiology: Our research in the field of ge- netic epidemiology is focused primarily on identifying genetic polymorphisms as susceptibility markers of cancer risk associated with the study of drug con- sumption, colorectal cancer, and development of a predictor of individual risk based on the combination of multiple genetic polymorphisms associated with cancer. In this line we also develop new biostatistical and bioinformatics methods.
Molecular diagnosis of cancer: Within the area of molecular diagnosis of cancer, our research focus- es on the identification of biomarkers useful for the early diagnosis of colorectal cancer. The domains of interest include genomics, proteomics and epigenet- ics. We believe that genomic regulatory networks are useful for the identification of new markers.
Prognostic markers and therapeutic response pre- diction: We have series of colorectal cancer patients well characterized from a clinical point of view, with a long follow-up and prospective data collection. These series are useful to identify prognostic mark- ers, prediction of therapeutic response and toxicity of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Identification of new therapeutic targets: We use of bioinformatics tools for the identification of genes involved in cancer. This is a complex task since it requires in vivo and in vitro validation of hypotheses generated by bioinformatics models using genomic and proteomic data.
