Main lines of research
Ecology and evolution of emerging zoonoses with relevance in public health.
The scientific objectives of our research team is to study the ecology and evolution of emerging infectious zoonoses that can have an impact on public health and to provide the necessary basic information for
risk assessment and management for these pathogens. The collaboration between the members of our research team started with the EVITAR network (2006-2009), funded by Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias. This collaboration has continued until nowadays thanks to different autonomic, national and european research projects and the funding by private companies. Our research group includes researchers from Estación Biológica de Doñana (CSIC), Centro Nacional de Microbiologia (ISCIII), Centro de Investigación en Sanidad Animal (INIA) and Servicio de Control de Mosquitos from Diputación de Huelva.
The objetives of our current research are:
Objective 1. Detection and characterization of virus with zoonotic potential in mosquitoes and bats. Objective 2. Molecular and antigenic description, and estimation of pathogenicity for new lineages and strains of zoonotic flavivirus like West Nile or Usutu virus using in vivo and ex vivo assays.
Objective 3. Understand the impact of vector communities on the amplification and transmission risk of virus to humans and horses.
