Main lines of research
CAPUA STUDY (LUNG CANCER in ASTURIAS). It is the largest epidemiological study in Spain in lung cancer research with 880 incident cases and 844 controls with demographic data, history of cancer and potential risk factors, and 24 SNPs genotyped.
In 2010 is integrated into the International Lung Cancer Consortium of the International Agency for Research on Cancer. It has also been incorporated into the SYNERGY project, which brings together several European case-control studies to analyze the effects of exposure to occupational carcinogens in the development of lung cancer.
SPANISH BLADDER CANCER STUDY. In Asturias it was initiated in 1997 as a collaborative project of the IMIM, DCEG INC in USA, and the University of Oviedo for assessing the risk of bladder cancer in relation to environmental and occupational exposures, life- style, genetic susceptibility and its interaction with environmental exposure. It is also evaluating mo-
lecular genetic and clinical factors associated with survival.
INMA PROJECT - Childhood and Environment. It was created with the aim of studying the role of the most important environmental pollutants in air, wa- ter and diet during pregnancy and early life, and its effects on infant growth and development. Asturias INMA Cohort in the III health area, begins in 2004 and follows 485 pregnant women from the 12th week of pregnancy and their children up to 7-8 years.
MCC SPAIN. Poblational multicase-control study that was initiated in 2008 with funding from the Transversal Action in Cancer, to investigate the in- fluence of environmental factors and their interac- tion with genetic factors in common or with peculiar epidemiologic characteristics tumors in our country (colorectal, breast, stomach, prostate and chronic lymphatic leukemia).
