Main lines of research
The activities of the Environmental Epidemiology and Cancer Unit of the National Center of Epidemi- ology (CNE) continue and broaden the experience of the Cancer Epidemiology Unit, established in 1991. The group mainly works on three research lines: 1) Surveillance of cancer burden in Spain, where our unit is considered a national reference in the study of the spatial and temporal distribution of this group of diseases, 2) environmental, occupational and life style epidemiology research, exploring the impact of environmental exposures in cancer both from an ecological point of view -possible effects of industrial pollution or physical agents- as well
as using individual measurements of exposure in case-control and cohort studies; those projects re- lated with biomonitoring in general population can also be included in this research line and 3) genetics and molecular cancer epidemiology, especially in breast cancer. Accordingly, the activities of the Unit, therefore, cover a wide range of topics in etiological research of different types of cancer and in the de- velopment of innovative methods of study design and data analysis. Most of the activities integrate researchers and groups external to the ISCIII from different disciplines.
