PROGRAMME 4. Social determinants of
health
Coordinator: Antonio Daponte Codina
The crisis and health sub-programme, which has the aim of studying the impact of the crisis on health in Spain, has reached the stage of drafting the results, with some articles already having been published and others in the publication process. As an indicator we could point out manuscripts published on contextual indicators for evaluating the social determinants of health and the Spanish economic crisis, the effect of the crisis on consumption of psychotropic drugs, European evidence on economic crisis
and inequalities in health, the crisis in intra-urban inequalities in mortality, differences between men
and women in the consumption of substances and the role of the education level and employment, and the manuscript with the work protocol of the mortality sub-project. There are also several articles being reviewed, including one on the evolution of mortality through suicides, and another on the mortality directly attributable to alcohol during the crisis in accordance with the employment conditions. We should lastly mention the participation in a special monograph on the “economic crisis” in the International Journal for Equity in Health.
As part of the energy poverty and health sub-programme, which has the main aim of analysing energy poverty (EP) in Spain’s “Autonomous Communities” and its relationship with health, as well as to appraise an intervention addressing people in an energy poverty situation, work has started on the following aspects: in the field of analysing association between EP and health a conceptual framework of the factors and processes (determinants) causing EP and their effects on health and inequalities in health has been drawn up, and was published in the International Journal of Health Services.
With regard to the appraisal of the intervention addressing people in an EP situation, the final protocol on qualitative evaluation has been written and phase 1 of the study has been completed, consisting in holding in-depth interviews with key agents in the intervention. Information was compiled from the interviews on the process of implementing the intervention, identifying barriers, facilitators, positive and negative aspects of the intervention and its potential effects.
Other general measures as part of the programme on Social Determinants and Health include the application of several groups in the call issued by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III for the MEDEA 3 project, “Socio-economic and environmental inequalities in mortality in small areas of cities in Spain”, which has been partially granted and which is currently starting to be developed. A project on “Interventions to promote active and healthy ageing at work centres based on the model for action in employment capacity” has also been got under way.
In the European sphere, we are continuing to work on the GENCAD project, and to cooperate in the EUGENMED (European Gender Medicine Network), from which several scientific publications have resulted. Furthermore, several members of the programme will take part in the European project entitled “European human biomonitoring initiative (hbm4eu)” granted to start in 2017; and lastly, several doctoral theses within the scope of the programme have been successfully completed.
