overweight and obesity among OECD countries. A recent study reported 25,3% of Spanish children aged 8-13 were overweight and 9.6% were obese [6]. Childhood obesity has a multifactorial aetiology. Unhealthy lifestyle such as inadequate diet and low physical activity is strongly related with weight gain.
Community Based Interventions programs (CBI) are a holistic approach to prevent childhood obesity. CBI act from all key sectors that influence childhood
development (family, school, health professionals, sports, media, stores and food markets). However, there is limited information on the efficacy of CBI in Europe. Currently we are performing a parallel inter- vention study including 2249 children aged 8 to 10 years from 4 Spanish towns to determine the effica- cy of a CBI on the prevention of childhood obesity and modification of lifestyle.
Research groups
Highlights
Our group participated in several publications of the PREDIMED study. One of the most important works was published in JAMA Internal Medicine and pres- ent data on the effect of the Mediterranean diet to prevent breast cancer in women at high cardiovas- cular risk. We observed a significant reduction of the incidence of breast cancer in women in the two Mediterranean diet intervention groups (one group was supplemented with extra virgin olive oil and the other with nuts) compared to the group control group.
Within our research line Impact of diet on cardio- metabolic health we have published a review in Mo- lecular Nutrition and Food Research with the aim to give an answer to the question if metabolically healthy obesity can be explained by genetics, diet, and inflammation. Furthermore, we provided addi- tional evidence for adverse impact of soft drinks on health outcomes. We showed that consumption of soft drinks is associated with increased waist cir- cumferences and odds of 10-y incidence of abdom- inal obesity. Replacement of 100kcal of soft drinks with 100kcal of milk was associated with 1.3cm decrease in waist circumferences. This work was published in The Journal of Nutrition.
